AI features

Riff ships with zero AI by default. Nothing runs, nothing suggests, nothing summarizes, until you decide otherwise. We think a Git client should be calm, and calm means quiet unless invited.

The opt-in model

Every assist is off until you turn it on, and each one is enabled individually. Opting in to one assist never opts you in to another. If you never touch the AI settings, Riff remains a fully AI-free Git client, and that is a supported way to use it forever, not a nag state.

The twelve assists

Twelve assists are available. They include:

  • Draft commit message
  • Explain diff
  • PR description
  • Changelog
  • Code review
  • Conflict assist
  • Rebase narrative
  • Commit insights

Each one follows the same rule: it does nothing until you have explicitly enabled it.

The Pro AI seat

AI in Riff requires a Pro AI seat on your Gapfy account. Without the seat, the assists are simply not available. The rest of Riff, including templates, the safety net, workspaces and integrations, does not depend on AI in any way. See Workspaces and repositories for how the plans compare on everything else.

Turn an assist on

  1. Open the settings dialog.
  2. Find the AI assists.
  3. Enable the ones you want, one by one.

You can disable any assist again at any time, and the rest of the client is unaffected.

Why zero by default

Plenty of tools now bolt AI onto every corner of the interface. We took the opposite bet: your Git client should be predictable first. When you rebase, you want to know exactly what will happen. When you commit, you want your own words unless you asked for help.

So AI in Riff is a deliberate choice, made per feature, by you. If an assist earns its place in your workflow, it is one switch away. If it does not, you will never see it.
